Adding Text to a model
« on: February 06, 2016, 01:59:05 am »

I have a 3d model of a runabout from star trek. It looks great, but I would like to add text to the model. There are markings on the side, but I want to place "USS RIO GRANDE" inside the markings. In the area outlined in the pic I have attached here. How do I do this?

Take the texture from that area then stick it in Photoshop, Gimp etc add your lettering then save, and you should have the lettering, I would suspect there is more than one texture for the area you have highlighted.

For an example, you can inspect the textures and modelling to see how the lettering was done for the craft's designation at the rear of the fuselage.

Its a 3ds file all the graphic lettering geometry is embedded into the model, and you have not used the textures as per the model!... still here is the USS Rio Grande with lettering now. I had to generate some more geometry in anim8or then overlay it onto the existing geometry. I have grouped it so if you want to change the colours you can do so.

Fantastic. Thank you, but When I place it in celestia the other side is blank. The model in Anim8or looks good on both sides.

Maybe I left out some textures? There were some that were not in the file I uploaded. Here is the complete texture file

Since you didn't provide textures with the original model, the model that kreator provided uses no textures.

The text on the port side of the revised runabout model is invisible in Celestia because its normals are reversed, pointing inward instead of outward. Hopefully you've learned how to fix that problem.

Updated the runabout with revised lettering should be ok now - see my original upload. What I would suggest is that you don`t keep grabbing these damn .3ds files from other people and learn how to make your own!

Selden: Argo has not used the textures that came with the model, they have been replaced with anim8or`s basic materials the only thing I have done to the model is add the lettering, and renamed the materials,  so no problems result from conflicting namesterials.

Flipping the normals did the trick. Thank you so much for your help. How do I go about bring out imbedded text in a model and how do I overlay that text as you did?
