A few questions
« on: February 15, 2021, 06:10:30 am »

I'm putting together a new series, going along with all the Some Guy in Space stuff. First off, if doing web episodes, what in your opinion is the optimal amount of time per episode. I've had people say 3 minutes, 5 and even as one longer video.

Second, the series goes along with a writing project I'm involved with. My eldest nephew and I actually developed a conlang (Constructed language. Examples of conlangs: elvish, klingon, etc) We were seriously contemplating doing all the dialog in this conlang. We have the written language,  but no accent or pronunciation and we though the video project would be a good way to figure that out. Thoughts?

There is no absolute length for a film or story. Either length will do. What's more important is that you keep the viewers engaged. Once you have a first pass at an episode, think about ways to make the storyline more clear, length or shorten sequences to add drama or suspense, or to give the viewers a little time to let what just happened sink in. Thoughtful editing can help turn an OK film into a really good on.

Thanks for the input. I truly appreciate it. I may have to do two versions. One in English and the other in the conlang.

I agree with Steve, there's no 'ideal' episode length.  It should be driven by the story, like chapters in a book.

I'm still up in the air about having the dialog in English or the conlang and subtitles.

  • Couldn't ever use Blender or Maya. Anim8or's good.

It may help to (if you guys haven't thought about it already) do some voiced-over storyboards of a full episode. Just to see how the pacing is and to trim the fat.
I think the conlang could be cool especially if it's done convincingly :)

Yea, I have subtitles of sorts, mainly for timing voiceovers with the scene.

You might consider providing the option to the viewer to experience either the "voiceover" or the conlang.

Some viewers find subtitles completely off-putting.

Stories and Storytelling
« Reply #9 on: February 24, 2021, 06:55:48 am »

I find that coming up with a 'narrative', a good story is hard. I tend to do snippets, small clips; mostly scenes from films. If there are any messageboards for writers maybe we could attract them here to collaborate?

Not a bad idea. I've also been looking for other writers, artists and musicians to help out with my writing project. That way the stories are told from different voices and view points, but keeping within the scope of the canon universe. This short video is one small story in the bigger storyline.

librivox might be a answer if the story is not too long....
