Knife tool question

Is there any way to get the knife tool to only "slice" visible geometry instead of all the way through the object?

If you turn off the back-facing setting in the Point Editor (the "Back" button in the left hand toolbar) then the knife tool will only cut faces that are facing the screen.

This is not exactly the save as cutting only faces that you can see because it will cut through a mesh that is hidden behind another one, but it may help you do what you want.
