Mascots
« on: April 24, 2008, 08:44:55 pm »

I'm working on two mascots for the Anim8or.org mascot competition as the site is being redesigned and expanded.
This is my first entry, I may throw some textures on, like a slight bumpmap and simple diffuse map but overall he's mainly finished.  I'm sticking with the blue gums, but I didn't want to render out another normal image with blue gums.
He's fully rigged and animate-able.
Tell me what you think:

Your mascots awfully happy, good luck with the comp!
You might want to work on the feet though, they look a bit flat, and maybe round off the toes.

Thanks everyone.
Tanzim:  You may be right about the feet.  I had the toes rounded previously, but I felt this would make them more stylized.  Perhaps it wasn't the right way to go about it.  Since I've already rigged the model, and now UV mapped it, I'm not going to change this, but thank you for the C&C, I apologize if it seems like I'm not taking your advice.  I do hear you though.
So here's what I've done, UV mapped him:

UV mapped it's a great mascot.
It looks so much better than the green variety which made me think of a pea with oversized dentures  ;D

i think it would look best if you hybridised the two colour schemes, and had the UVed version for most of the parts, but kept the black eyes, and maybe also the solid-colour gums.  i think the textured eyes make it seem less alive than before.

all just imo, of course :)

Yeah, the eyes should be black for a realistic effect. Not sure about the gums, maybe you should return them back to normal (Still looks cool though). Or don't, I am not sure if the texture and some pink gums would go together. But the black eyes is a good idea

Haha, well thank you all.  I'm glad you like the new texture  :P
Just to let you all know though, that was never actually meant as a texture.  As you can see, it's a numbered grid.  It's meant to show off the UV mapping to show how well or unwell it deforms.  So if the squares/numbers were stretched or skewed, then that wouldn't necessarily be good UV mapping.  People often use simple black/white checkerboard patters to do this as well.
Haha, I guess it was a misunderstanding that paid off though.  I'm glad you like the texture's color.
As for the actual texture which I'll be painting, I think I'll perhaps give the creature a bit of a hybrid of the two.  Perhaps a creamy color with some green mixed in, we'll see.  Another thing to know though, no color for a texture is definite.  If this were to become a mascot, it would be textured differently for different occasions.  So I plan to make the texture versatile.

so that's why steve included 'CHECKS' as the sole default texture in anim8or?  i never realised that before, i always just thought it was some random image that he put in for development testing... :-\ :D

that's not a definite fact, guys, just a semi-educated guess... i always wondered why the loaded textures list always included 'CHECKS', and this is my best guess at why ;D
