Geographical Study of the Anim8or Community
« on: May 01, 2008, 09:31:21 am »

As part of the geography syllabus, I have been asked to survey any one community of my choice who share a common interest, not one that shares a common geographical location, once I have enough completed surveys, I am then to produce a report on that community based on the questions...
OK I'll keep this short, could you guys just answer the following questions for me.

Oh and a few rules, I'll need correct English (just in case I misinterpret a response), only make one post (if you change your mind about something, just edit your post), don't make comments, only answers, and finally, I'll only need a maximum of 10 completed surveys. This would help a lot, thanks a lot in advance.
And I will upload the report if you guys want me to ;D.

The questions:
  • Has your lifestyle/background or age affected your usage of Anim8or (or any CG program, if so which ones {official name}) and/or activity in the Anim8or community (or any CG forum/chatroom, if so which ones {URL})?
  • Has your usage of Anim8or (or any CG program, if so which ones {official name}) and/or activity in the Anim8or community (or any CG forum/chatroom, if so which ones {URL}) affected your lifestyle/background?
  • How has recent updates of Anim8or affected your appreciation for Anim8or (or any CG program, if so which ones {official name}) and or the Anim8or community (or any CG forum/chatroom, if so which ones {URL})?
  • Has recent changes/advances in technology affected your usage of Anim8or (or any CG program, if so which ones {official name}) or activity in the Community (or any CG forum/chatroom, if so which ones {URL})?
  • Has any recent events in the world affected the way you use Anim8or (or any CG program, if so which ones {official name}) and or the Anim8or community (or any CG forum/chatroom, if so which ones {URL}), if so, which ones?
  • Extra comments you might want to add

PS If these questions seem too personal, if they are just PM me and I'll change them  ;).

I will join this...

  • I could copy-paste thecolclough's answer here... Just read his post, that's my answer ::)
  • Yes... Sometimes I spend too much time working on some crap... while I should study (and my exams are coming...)
  • Pretty much... ART ray tracer rocks!
  • Not really. I've got my comp for 6 months and the rendering is a bit faster than with the previous one... That's all
  • If 'recent events' means 'last christmas', the answer is 'YES'
  • As for the extra comments... Have a nice day :)

That's all ;)

The Answers:
  • Yes, as a highschool student I am very constrained with time.  I don't get nearly as much time as I'd like to create art.
  • A bit.  Mainly, I've become obsessed with art, and I'm convinced that I wish to pursue a career in CG.  Anim8or.org has had an effect on both my maturity as an artist and a poster, as well as greatly helping me improve in my artistic abilites.
  • The new v0.97 update has greatly improved my appreciation for anim8or, as now I can render much more realistically.  Still, other programs such as 3ds max greatly interest me because of their sheer power as a 3d program (as well as being industry standards.)
  • This isn't very recent of a change, but at the beginning of last school year I got a laptop, which enabled me to always have access to my own computer with my own work that makes it much easier for me to have time to work with anim8or (though I'm still greatly constricted by school.)  My tablet also speeds up my abilities to use anim8or and I feel improves them greatly.
  • I haven't really been affected with my anim8or use because of an event in the world.

1) Certainly!  If I was 2 years old I would be unable to use Anim8or, and if I was 98 I would probably be distrustful of computers.  Also, my lifestyle allows me sufficient funds to own a computer and pay for an internet connection, and sufficient time to build animations.

2) Probably.  I spend time in Anim8or when I should be mowing the lawn, or washing the dishes, or working out, or any of a dozen more productive things I could be doing.

3) The ART raytracer is fantastic, not so much because of what it is itself, rather because it reminds me that Anim8or is a work in progress, and there is still so much to come.

4) No.

5) No.

6) Good luck with the report.
