Finished (?) project - The Need for Speed contest entry
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:09:49 pm »

Hello fellow Anim8ors.  This is possibly my final submission to the Need for Speed contest being run on animanon.com (it's a running contest, all are welcome to submit entries, from all skill and experience levels).  I may add sound effects if I get time before this stage of the contest ends.  The lens effects were added frame by frame in Corel, otherwise the modelling, rigging and rendering were all performed using Anim8or V0.95.

Well, it's sorta original.  The idea of the trike with the front section able to bank when cornering has been around for a while, and a few concept vehicles have been made that follow this idea, but in my opinion they just didn't look sporty enough.  I imagine such a vehicle would be a blast to drive, so I wanted mine to look a bit tougher, nastier, more dangerous.

WOW  :o
The other movies need to be pretty good to challenge that one.
(Still can't believe how good that movie is)
All with Anim8or? How did you get the movement so smooth?

Great animation, as usual. I love the city environment, it's incredibly real! I guess you used a lot of emissive maps... Great job!

The vehicle is really cool, but the animation didn't really give me the feeling of speed. I don't know why, perhaps I expected some skidding and smoking tires ::)

Never mind, cool animation anyway!

Although the subject is not really my "thing" I greatly admire the work.

Falloffalot:  I guess the only thing I can say about smooth movement is to plan the video well, and use as few keyframes as possible.  The more keyframes, the more likely you will get a jerky video.

Kubajzz:  I agree, the feeling of speed doesn't really kick in until (for me) the last few seconds of the animation before the credits.  I have a few ideas (suggested in cc's across various forums) that might help to return a feeling of speed, and I think adding sound effects would help considerably too.  And yes, I did use lots of emissive maps, derived from copyright free photographs.

Lynn22: Thanks!

Looks good, but i'm bit missing the feeling of speed. It all seems not to go so fast, you might want to speed up some scenes a bit. Or a some directional blur using a good video editing program. Overall its really nice.

Great job!

Now I can say I felt the speed, mainly in the first half of the animation. Good luck in the competition!

I was conscious of making the video as realistic as possible (within reason) and the vehicle physics was a big part of that.  I deliberately did not want to go down the road of making a video that looked like a video game, where cars handle WAY better than real cars, and must have tyres with suction cups on them or something, allowing them to move and corner at ridiculous speeds.  Maybe I should not have been so conservative in my approach, but it is a trend that tends to pervade all my work, right or wrong.

Excellent video with a great sense of reality. How did you made the physics?

Thanks.  I tried answering you on YouTube but it had a hissy fit and wouldn't let me post a reply.  Anyhoo, the physics was all based on a little bit of trial and error and a lot of pencil and paper.  The trick I use is to imagine the scene, really visualise it, and then use a stop watch to mark the timing of all the key "nodes" in the video (eg, car takes off, car lands, car bounces up, down, car starts left turn, etc).  These timing marks allow you to build a kind of storyboard, and based on the 25 frames a second PAL standard it is simple to convert the times into frame numbers.  Basically it involves quantifying and recording an imagined idea, so the timing isn't lost in the construction and the animation closely follows the original visualisation.  A physics engine would certaiinly be a nice addition to Anim8or though, it would speed things up considerably.
