Evolution X :)
« on: May 22, 2008, 11:04:34 am »

 :) Hi again everyone...

I want to apologise for not making any recent improvements on my "Max" project ...
I've been slightly, inspirationally distracted.
I hoped the ray tracer would allow for reflections. Does anyone know how I can get a mirror surface ?
I used Anim8or 9.7 to render the second image...
Please critisize, comment and share advice :)

Ps.- I hope to make a short scene with it...

not a bad start, you might want to give it an underside tho, as the seethrough radiator and wheelarch in the top image look a bit dodgy.  i can't advise on making mirrored surfaces (although i know it is possible in ART, as people have posted mirror renders around here), but i'm sure someone else will post soon enough and tell you how to do it ;)

nice username, btw ;D

looks a good start I must agree with thecolclough, the wing mirror looks a bit dodgey, that's all I can think about for the moment

First, if you haven't searched google and the forum for your answer first, I'm disappointed.  That's the first thing you should do.

To use the new ART raytracer, first you have to be using v0.97.  It's not labeled as a stable version but I and others have found it more stable than v0.95 (the only slightly unstable part is the ART raytracer, so just save before using that raytracer to render with.)

Now, read this: http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html

Last of all, Here's a great quote from Kubajzz that should teach you exactly how to use it.
I either don't entirely understand the interface, but the examples helped me to find out how to use it. Here is a short guide:

Transparent lens:

  • Make a new material in Object mode, open the Material dialog box and click "Attributes" next to the "Textures" button
  • now you can add attributes as described here. Click "New" and type "class" (!! case sensitive !!); click OK and select "string" option in the window
  • Now set "transparent" as value of the "class" atribute (type "transparent" in the field below...)
  • Now we have created material that will behave like lens; one more thing you have to do is to set the the index of refraction (how much will the lens distort the image). Click "New" again and type "IOR" (for Infex Of Refraction); click Ok, and set the number you want (probably something between 1.0 and 2.0)
  • And it's done! Now we have two attributes - "class" (determines what kind of material it will be) and "IOR" (specific for the "transparent" class)
  • Now don't forget to make the material transparent in the main material window and apply it...

It works the same way for all the material effects... The only difference is when you want to make reflection (using 'Anim8or' class) - you don't have to create the 'class' attribute because it is 'animn8or' by default...

Thanks alot Hihosilver.

Although it wasn't quite what I was hoping for, it's a reflection none the less...

Stinky:  Read the first link I sent you.  There's more than one class.  The example in that quote is using the class>transparent, while you want specular>reflection.  READ the link I sent you.  It explains all of this, and all the different classes.  Never expect to give you an exact tutorial on how to do exactly what you want.  The tutorial teaches you how to use materials in the ART raytracer, you have to apply it to what you want to do.  It teaches you one class, it's the same method for the others with some different typing.
Also, with the link I sent, download the example files and examine the attributes, they'll show you what to do.

Thanks a tonne, I uploaded another pic showing the wing mirror with a reflection of the side of the car i guess i have to toy with lighting... (and maybe change the angle of my mirror :P ) to get a better reflection of the side of the car...

Thanks again... btw, I started another post so i can continue uploading progress...
