... it's the lines on the resultant subdivision mesh that would be better being gray and able to be disabled.

I agree. I think that is what I was trying to say in this awkward post a while back:,5035.msg37807.html#msg37807

It doesn't seem to work on my old Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7. I get this message:

It seems to cut of the top half of Anim8or's menu bar...

Actually, This only happens if the Anim8or window is maximized when F11 is pressed. Otherwise it works perfectly.

This is a great idea, Raxx!! It works on Windows 8. It seems to cut of the top half of Anim8or's menu bar on this particular computer, but that's not a big deal.

Anim8or did not work with Wine on my Mac. I sometimes use Virtualbox, but Bootcamp is the best way to run Anim8or on your Mac.

... how come on the website it says the latest is November 2014?

I don't know about that, but Steve posts news about the latest development build here:,4795.0.html. The link to download build 1205 is at the top of the page.

ASIANBATMAN: Tutorials can be found here:

I think what you are referring to is a shadow catcher... which is not feature.

Yes, shadow catcher. I never heard of it before but that is exactly what I want to do.

This is a little bit closer. I'm experimenting with using a transparency map. I could probably edit this to work, but to get really good results, a special transparent material that only shows shadows would be useful. I will add it to my already lengthy wish list.

Thanks for your response everyone. I realize that it isn't something that could happen in the real world, but what I'm trying to do is capture the shadows of objects while saving to PNG with transparent background.

Imagine that the yellow object beneath is not visible, but that the shadows remain visible overlaying the transparent background. I have tried to find a suitable workaround in an image editor, but I haven't quite been able to achieve the result that I want. The idea is to have the shadows appear to fall on an image behind the PNG such as a background image in a webpage.

Does anyone know of a way to make shadows appear on a transparent material?

Hey Raxx, That is very cool! There is a slight delay but Anim8or in a browser is amazing.

Davdud101:  I often run Anim8or on Virtualbox with Windows 8 on my iMac. Virtualbox is similar to Parallels and Fusion, but a bit tricky to install and configure. Virtualbox is free, but you would still need a copy of Windows. For more intense Anim8ing, I use Bootcamp and the same Windows partition in order to have the benefit of better graphics drivers. Early on, I tried Wine and Crossover but had no luck with either.

Great tool! I realize that the idea is to prevent cutting faces unintentionally, but I think it would be nice if you could cut two or three adjacent faces and edges at once.

Thanks, Cooldude, Neirao, and RudySchneider. Extruded text is actually how I became interested in Anim8or. I was looking for a better way to make nifty 3D logos for video productions when I stumbled onto the Anim8or website.
