You could try reducing the size of the texture, or if your project already has lots of textures, etc. that are using up a lot of memory you could try loading your texture into a blank project and see if that works.

You might want to start with a cube with more vertices so that you don't need to subdivide as much.

Try rendering full frames (uncompressed) and see if it will play.

Lights don't cast in scene view, only when rendered.

In the latest version (.97d) lights give an rough cast over the scene. However this may depend on which version of opengl your graphics card supports.

v.097d does include markers to show were spot lights will cast if that helps.

You could do a render without the character to get the reflections, then one with the character in and merge the two images.

From what you've said it sounds like putting lots of small planes will varying transparencies by your engine to make it look like it it glowing.

Try increasing the specular value of the building to increase is reflectiveness.

As far as I know scripts don't work in scene mode. However someone more experienced with ASL may have found a workaround.
