Thanks for the information. I had a feeling this would not be possible to make with ASL looking at the spline commands we have to work with.

Thanks for the offer on an external converter, but I really don't need you to go through the trouble. Also if I really need it I could just make a simple one on my own.

I am actually thinking about working on making a program over the summer (right now during the semester I just don't have enough time) that would read and write a few 3D file formats including the ability to go from anim8or to modxml (I also know ASL does not support animation which I can get out of the anim8or file). My goal would be to make the program do allot more then just file conversions but I have to start some where :)

Its called .modxml its a custom xml format, which supports models, textures, animations, and spline data. It was designed for use with the roller coaster tycoon 3 custom scenery importer.

Here is an example of the spline part of the format

Is it possible to export spline data in an export script? Or is only mesh data assessable?

I know it has been bought up that some times people have been using panoramic scripts for things other then what they were intended. Now while I think over all a better solution is needed (also for like when a shape uses over  10 settings) for now what if we were able to get user input from the console.

Also if you could add support for prompting the user with input and output dialog boxes that I think might even produce a better way for communicating to the user from a script.

I have gotten away from my own need for ase files a bit but I know there are plenty of people that would find it useful.

I know ASE files are completely text based (I have done some manual editing of them). I don't think ASL supports binary data but I believe it is fully capable of exporting a text file.

Texel if I get a chance I will have to give your program a try.

Thanks for all the great scripts. If your looking for a script to do what about a script that would extrude a cylinder with x diameter and y divisions along a path. I know there is the shape tool that makes the 2D shape to extrude but most of the time I don't find that accurate enough for what I want to do.

Yep its in the same directory as the rest of the scripts (which are working) I enabled the Script Console and it does not load it up during start up. if I load it from load script it would compile with no error.

After some experimenting I realized the file was . A8S instead of .a8s once I fixed that it now works (not sure where the caps came from).

I could be 100% wrong on this but I believe render farms can be done with out actually having the program directly support it.

I will say that a home made computer cluster (basically the same as a render farm) is not an easy thing to accomplish and very few users will effectively be able to set one up. Its not a simple as connecting two computers together with a wire and running a program.

If you ever decided to redo the interface for a linux version maybe the best would be to use a Crosse platform GUI like wxWidgets (there are quite a few and I am not sure witch is the best) This way from that point on you would only have to do the GUI work one time and you can compile it for all the operating systems you plan on supporting.

My biggest suggestion would be to you to think of every thing you would want your PC to do and see how much things would change by going to a mac. Chances are there will be some programs like anim8or that wont work on mac that might be hard to find an alternative for but more and more programs are becoming cross platform and there are usually good alternative programs.
Are you looking for a desktop or laptop? For various reasons I would say to stay away from dell. I am not sure who I would say is the best. I would probably say look at HP or toshiba. Sony vio and Gateway also have some good computers. The biggest thing I would say is make sure you know exactly what you are paying for. If you get a vista computer I would make sure you have at least 2 gigs of ram and a 256mb video card that is compatible with vista and opengl.

One is unless you play an OS for a long time its not fair to judge it takes time to learn a few mins here and there wont make you comfortable with it. (I have no idea though how much experience wit mac you have)
Two though if you really want to learn it its not that bad. Granted I am very good when it comes to computers and pick up on things fast. But I never had experience with mac for more then a few mins here and there and with in a day of owning it I had most of it figured out that I was comfortable with it and with in a week I new it in side and out basically.
We all have different uses for our computers through and that's what also makes the mac vs PC thing even harder. If you mostly play PC only games and use PC only programs then a mac might not be for you. But for some one like me most of what I did I had almost no problem transferring from manly PC to mac. Most programs I used were already Croce platform or had very close alternatives.
One thing I really like about mac is how much nicer it is to work with a lot of stuff on the screen at one time it just flows so much better then PC. I do a lot of web design, and very often I can have 5about 5 files open, ftp, fire fox, and safari (some times gimp and quite a few image files). Now I have run basically the same set up on PC many times and style do when I have to debug code for IE and its just so much nicer when working on my mac.

I also would not get a PC with the intention of running OSX on it technical that could be conceded illegal and part of what you get when going mac is the hardware.
