General Anim8or Forum / Suggestions Solicited
« on: April 22, 2024, 12:21:08 pm »
I have decided I want to produce my own take on some of the iconic spaceships from classic SciFi films. I'm starting with the C-57D "Space Cruiser" from the 1956 cult film "Forbidden Planet". I found a useable, scalable exterior view and dimensions to make the shape of the hull. I'm not worried about the saucer itself because I can visualize the shapes needed to model the thing.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to do one of the iconic shots in the film, namely the landing. How would you go about getting that double glow underneath the craft when it is landing. I can see there are two different cones but how might I get the edges to be kind of indefinite? I can do transparency and textures even transparency map texture. No problem. I'm looking for suggestions as to how to give those "landing beams" indistinct edges. If there is a tutorial on doing something like this (a "hologram" display?) a simple link will suffice. Otherwise I know there some really talented people in the community and I wanna pick your brains.

I do plan to animate the landing so I will definitely looking for advice on how to animate various elements.

General Anim8or Forum / Reorienting Axes Trick
« on: April 11, 2024, 10:08:51 am »
I've discovered a way to trick Anim8or into resetting the object axes post rotation. Mirroring. If you convert an mesh to mirrored, the axes realign automatically. So I rotate as necessary then convert to mirrored. Bingo! The mesh retains its current orientation and all the axes revert to 0 rotation.

What do you think?

General Anim8or Forum / Possibly Stupid Question for Stephen
« on: March 28, 2024, 03:38:40 pm »
First off, if I ask a "why" question it is purely to understand how something came to be done as/when it was.

So:

My question involves the parameters that can be entered when first creating a sphere. For instance, when I create a lat/long sphere I can specify up to 24 longitude lines but latitude maxes out at 16. May I ask why the difference? And why the (for some things) low limits? (Note: "I don't remember." and "Nunya business." are absolutely acceptable responses.)

When I go to create a geodesic sphere (dome actually for me) the maximum number of "divisions" is 6. Why that number? I'm wondering if it was just a choice or there was a practical/procedural reason for those parameter limits.
(I'll go away now. Stephen, I am in such awe at what you have accomplished with Anim8or that you cannot believe it.)

General Anim8or Forum / Newby To Scenes Needing Assistance
« on: February 23, 2024, 03:37:50 pm »
Okay, so I have taken the plunge and am trying to use the scene function to make pictures where I control camera placement and lighting. I get that there is a good bit to that so can be patient. What I need to do is to get rid of that checkerboard floor. I haven't read all the way through the manual section on scenes but am working my way through it. But for the moment I need to get rid of the floor. How do I do that?

General Anim8or Forum / Landform Generator
« on: February 12, 2024, 02:10:39 pm »
Anybody know of a cheap (okay, free) landform generator? I am taking the plunge into creating scenes and want to generate some basic landforms to put buildings and other things into in order to build a scene.

General Anim8or Forum / Possible Stupid Question #5 Saving Project Files
« on: February 11, 2024, 12:10:13 pm »
In the "File" menu I have 3 "Save" options, "Save", "Save As", and "Save All".

"Save As" I use when creating a new project. I have a baseline project file with materials I like to use and a single basic object. I open that file and "Save As" to the new project title. Got it. No problem.

Now, what is the difference between "Save" and "Save All"? Am I saving the whole project with the "Save" or do I need to do a "Save All"? I sometimes switch between objects without saving before switching to a different object. Am I going to lose work like that? Note: I don't use the autosave feature because some of my project files can get pretty big and a file save can take upwards of half a minute or longer. Murphy's Law predicts that the auto file save action is always going to activate when I am doing some really intricate work and therefor DO NOT want to have to suddenly pause. Bleeping aggravating!

General Anim8or Forum / Unexpected Behavior With Textures
« on: January 15, 2024, 05:23:43 pm »
I've been experimenting with textures and sometimes Anim8or does things I'm really not expecting.

Is there a max (or optimum) file size (Mb) or image size (A pixels x B pixels @ C pixels/inch) for use as a texture? I've loaded a couple of (admittedly hi-rez) textures and Anim8or just quits. Is that to be expected? For the record I'm using Photoshop Elements 2021 to create/edit my texture files.

Having difficulty with bump maps. Again is there a max or an optimum file size or image size or resolution?

Finally, I've loaded a crap ton of textures into the current project. I'd like to be able to delete some of them. Can I do that? And while I'm at it, is there a way to delete unused/no longer used materials?

Sorry to be such a crybaby.

Observation: Using textures is really cool. GENERATING those textures can be a royal pain. (funny how the universe works that way, huh)

General Anim8or Forum / Rendering Question
« on: January 10, 2024, 11:49:22 am »
When I use the "Render" function I just get my model on a flat background. I have generated some star fields in Photoshop Elements that I'd like to have in the background of my renders. Do I need to set up a scene? I'm not doing an animation, I just want to "photograph" my SciFi models on a background of stars. Point me in the direction I need to go, please. The alternative would be having to ramp up in something like Blender and while an old dog (I'm 72) CAN learn new tricks it's a whole lot more work!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

General Anim8or Forum / Assistance Urgently Needed - Textures
« on: December 23, 2023, 03:51:09 pm »
I have not worked with textures on my models since BEFORE the Covid lockdown in 2020. Suddenly I find myself needing to apply textures to specific faces of a given mesh. I absolutely cannot recall how to do that. Help an old man out? Just a link to a tutorial will suffice. Otherwise a basic step 1, step 2 step 3 general procedure will do.

Second issue. I asked a similar question earlier but do not think I expressed my question intelligibly. The problem was entirely mine. So here is what I need to do. I do a lot of things with modified spheres. Unfortunately when Anim8or generates a sphere the "convergence points" of the sphere (north and south poles?) are on the top and bottom. I need them to be on the front and back. No biggie I just put "90" into one of the axes and "BINGO" its oriented. The problem is that can cause  issues for other things. What I would like to be able to do is create a sphere, rotate it as needed then bring the mesh's axes back congruent to the other axes in the program. Is it as simple as rotating the mesh axes?

General Anim8or Forum / Normals Acting Odd
« on: December 04, 2023, 04:31:05 pm »
I'm building a space freighter. Big sucker. Currently working on the crew cab. It needed windows so I'm working away with the topo knife. I back out and look at my work and something odd is going on on the left side. I have attached screen caps in both rounded and flat shading.

I swear I did everything the same on both sides. They look the same flat. When I am in point mode and select (a) it only shows as a single face. But there are two things going on. #1 the face I cut - only on the left side - shows up flat. #2 the face below the one I cut is showing a crease.

Help! Anybody know what is going on? More importantly, anybody know how to FIX it? I still have the original, uncut shape if necessary. I can also rebuild it. But I'd rather not HAVE to do that. It looks like there's something wonky with the normals.

General Anim8or Forum / Suggestion Requested - Chrome Metal
« on: November 19, 2023, 08:40:00 am »
I need to make something out of shiny chrome metal. I would love to hear anybody's suggestion as to the materials editor settings to do that. Here is what I have at present:
Ambient = 0.300
Diffuse = 0.900
Specular = 0.900
Emissive = 0.000
Rough = 6
Trans = 1
Brilliance = 2

Ambient/Diffuse RGB = 217, 217, 217
Specular RGB =  228, 228, 228

Any suggestions for tweaks will be appreciated - AND TRIED!

Thank you in advance.

General Anim8or Forum / Stupid Non-Newbie Question #4 (Topo Knife)
« on: November 17, 2023, 02:25:35 pm »
The Topo knife tool is acting in unexpected ways. I have a shape (basically a sphere) into which I need to "cut windows". So I call up the topo knife and make a series of horizontal cuts for the bottom of the row of windows. Okay! Then I start to make a series of cuts to mark the top of the row of windows. NOT Okay! It won't let me cut any of the edges I cut in the 1st pass! Doubtless I'm doing something wrong but I'll be dipped in chipotle salsa if I know what. Anybody have ideas?

General Anim8or Forum / Stupid Non-Newbie Question #3
« on: October 29, 2023, 12:52:05 pm »
I needed a shape like a propane tank or a medicine capsule. I made a sphere which I specified to be lat/long with 24 vertical segments (the max supported) and 15 horizontal (1 less than max) at a given diameter. the advantage with using 15 horizontal segments is that it gives me a sphere without an equator - i.e. it's already part way to the shape I need. Then I converted to mesh and mirrored it. at that point all I had to do was drag one hemisphere to where I needed it and voila propane tank!

Now I want to go back and orient the danged thing so that it is lined up fore-aft on the z axis with the object's axes aligned with the main axes of the program. How do I do that? In effect I want to rotate just the axes without rotating the object itself. Can I do that?

General Anim8or Forum / Stupid Non-Newbie Question #2
« on: October 24, 2023, 11:48:33 am »
Somebody point me in the right direction.
I remember taking a solid figure, insetting one end somewhat and then - somehow - sliding the poly in the middle towards the opposite end thereby skinning the inside of the figure. I remember (or think I remember) doing that but cannot for the life of me remember how. Just a suggestion of the tool to use will suffice. I am slowly regaining basic facility in Anim8or. if nothing else my hands remember some of the keyboard shortcuts.

General Anim8or Forum / Stupid Non-Newbie Question #1
« on: October 20, 2023, 11:33:04 am »
I vaguely recall being to generate a sphere with a known number of lat/long segments and a specified size. Am I off the beam? What I want to do is make a medicine capsule shape with max resolution and not have to futz with surface normals. I figure to do that as follows: generate a circular spline of max resolution, split it in 2, separate the halves, connect the halves with straight lines and lathe the resulting shape into my medicine capsule with surface normals all nice and arranged.

Could somebody point me in the right direction?
