Finished Works and Works in Progress / Fireplace front
« on: April 02, 2008, 11:39:38 am »
This is a fireplace front that I'm planning to use in my palace room. It will be one of those antique, huge fireplaces, and a very elaborated one. The whole room is a work in progress, but it is only live on my mind, for now.

This is just the beginning of a decorated side stone. I will only make one. The other will be mirrored.

You can see the half column that will be on each side of the fireplace. Still much to do. Only 50% of the column is finished (about 5% of the whole work and about 0.1% of the whole room).

The model is nice, unlike some YouTube users. Unfortunately, those are pretty common these days.

Though I thing the abdomen/spine is a little short.

hi, i hope i'm not the idiot you are reffering to...i really hope it's the other guy...
Don't worry about that, we all know that YouTube idiots don't usually frequent civilized forums such as this one.

I'm a fan of the car too, especially the Shelby models.

Congratulations for your nice model! I can't wait to see it complete.

By the way, where do you get the blueprints?

You can use the models and textures from my website. Some of the textures have specular maps too and they are all seamless. Hope they are useful.

Go to:
http://www.cumesoftware.eu.org/models/
http://www.cumesoftware.eu.org/textures/

You will need sounds for your game as well. Go to "The Free Sound Project" website:
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/
You can use some sounds for free, as they are under a Creative Commons license (by-sa). Pay attention to the respective license for each sound you use.

Good luck in your project.

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Where is Anim8or v0.96?
« on: March 30, 2008, 04:31:25 pm »
In my opinion 0.96 was pretty stable.  There were a few issues with the cut tool, but those were fixed in 0.97.  0.96 never died before it launched, in fact, it launched a while ago.  It's the beta version that's been using scripts and asl.
Indeed, v0.96 is stable enough. But I can only find the beta version.

Where is the final version? Will it be launched?

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Rankings in the Forum
« on: March 29, 2008, 07:11:11 pm »
I simply don't agree, because it allows users to censor certain posts, as it happens with YouTube comments. Anything that allows a user rating other user, directly and indirectly, is a bad idea. That is why some SMF administrators don't implement the karma feature.

Of course, besides the karma feature there is always the temptation to disable a user with a bad karma, ultimately enabling revenge and user "bans" by users. If the idea was implemented, most posts would have a negative rating. You can mark my words, since in SMF forums having the karma feature, most users have negative karma (below -30) and a few have a positive karma (above +2).

General Anim8or Forum / Where is Anim8or v0.96?

Is it me, or V0.96 died before being launched? Where is it? And why this version 0.97?

Please, don't get me wrong, but this issue is confusing me.

Finally, raytracing!

Does it handle shadows of transparent objects as well?

Great improvement, by the way!

I would love to see the ability to export alpha channels, whether as a separate BMP (like the depth channel) or as a combined PNG
Indeed, as long as the user, when exporting to PNG, could export as a single combined PNG or as two PNGs, one containing the alpha channel. Importing combined PNGs would be good, too. Nevertheless, simply implementing PNGs would be a great step, since I expect it to be very complex and troublesome.

56
Indeed. Using both Cartesian (XYZ) coordinates and polar coordinates to set a camera is a good idea. I say "both"  since XYZ coordinates on a camera are also handy, so I would leave this feature on.

...Lossy compression is not that bad when saved once, but often times when creating content for a video or a game things get continually improved and each time a texture is changed and saved as a jpeg, its quality degrades futher. We do have lossless compression with BMP and GIF, however file size of BMP and color limitations of GIF and lack of good alpha support for both make them not ideal in many circumstances. I understand that BMP does support compression but that feature seems to go mostly unused...
Just to add a point:
The compression used in the PNG format is lossless as well. You can load and save a PNG image as many times you wish, and all of its pixels will be fully preserved. JPEG may be handy, but even when saved using the best of quality (and smallest compression) the image will be degraded.

You know in Version 0.96 Beta the two side candle brums (:0)You could just make one and click Edit>Copy>Paste and voila.Probably save 1 h of modeling or so.Anyway Awesome WORK!
I don't know if I understood well. But here is my attempt:  ???
In Anim8or 0.95 you can copy meshes as well (I'm not sure if that is what you are referring too). However, is is preferable to copy two objects on a scene, as the same mesh is used in both copies and a lot of disk space is saved.

Anyway, thanks for your feedback!  :)

What's PNG?Any pictures in PNG?Is the quality better or worse?
The quality is better than JPEG. PNG is a lossless compressed format, while JPEG uses lossy compression to store a image. This means that a JPEG image will have distortion, even when saved with the best quality. Consider a PNG image as a zipped BMP ready to be seen with any browser.

You can google for "PNG" to see images as well.

P.S.: The PNG implementation is pretty much done. You can get the official PNGLib for free.

well i'd say they're worth the work.  i particularly like the twisty effect on the tall pieces.  looking forward to seeing the finished scene!

i'd offer to help with finding a painting, but i'm afraid i don't know very much about things like that  8p

I've made the twisting "by hand", although there are modifiers for that. But I don't like to use them since I like to do it with precision. It is a rather unnecessary work, but each one has his ways.

If you are interested, you can download and use this models at my website. I have seamless textures available for download as well.
