i am currently in the room modeled sitting at the desk. looking at it now i find that cheating with the geometry could help significantly. one thing i notice on the real world counterpart, there is a darker corner around the whole thing that seems to be produced by a small bevel, i could replicate that to give some contrast between the wall and frame. the windowframe does have a slightly higher specular value as you said, and many small corners that make shadows. i guess being cheap is costly huh? i didn't want to make too many colors that are almost the same, or too many vertices.

thanks for the help and compliment

Pincho, looking at this frame in a bright light does reveal that the paint is not even over the whole thing, probably caused by the painter and the paintbrush not having uniform pressure during the stroke. also different bristles might have been stronger and made a deeper ridge than the softer bristles around them. flecks of dried paint make bumps in the paint. old age can cause peeling or bubbles.

Hey all,

currently in my project it seems that the window frame blends right into the wall. but in real life i can see the windowsill easily. the geometry is all there but it just blends in. does anyone have any ideas on how to make it stand out better?

you can see the windowsill best where the desk ends on the left.

thanks ahead of time.

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Need help fixing a broken file
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:56:28 pm »
i have a very similer problem, but i checked for the "-" signs that you specified but did not find any under "faces". it's a huge file though.

are there any tutorials on this subject? especially since it seems common

the intent was total animation

landing gear are separate parts
rotors
gun turret
tail rotors

i'm working on a detailed interior, but it is not finished(which is why the glass is not transparent)

i have a different project i'm working on now that should be finished soon, then i may go back to this

General Anim8or Forum / soft shadows change lighting
« on: December 22, 2009, 01:21:32 am »
i just noticed that changing the ray trace shadows from soft made my project get really dark. is this normal? i wanted to save on render time so i turned off the soft shadows i was using, on the render right afterwards the whole project got much darker. turning soft shadows back on fixes the problem.

it's not a big problem, i just want to know for the future

my first model, i made it several months ago.

i just made the animation today to show it's components.

it is a large rocket capable of interplanetary travel. the interior bay sections are large enough to fit an array of space shuttles, up to 12, for in-flight repairs or supply shipments. the outer shell of the front sections are 2-3 stories thick and are two counter-rotating artificial gravity platforms for the passengers comfort and convenience. in front of the hab sections and internal bay is a huge lander designed for controled entry to the surface of the target planet for colonization.

realistically, this would never leave the ground, would instantly lose structural strength the instant the engines are fired and would have no chance of returning back to Earth, but who cares about realism?  :D

make the gun a separate object and make it the parent of the flash? then just move the gun so it follows the persons hand. this would give more flexibility in positioning the gun as well

it's not quite finished.

the dark line in the middle is where the least amount of light is coming off of the world lights, the two bright spots on the sides are where the light is directly in line with the object, getting more direct light than where the object is parralel to the light rays. here is good tutorial on lighting i found posted here on the forum.

thanks $imon

the textures are photo realistic, it took me days of taking pictures, editing pictures with GIMP(which i used to think was gimp, as in lame  :D not so much anymore), taking more pictures, etc.

the wood texture on the entertainment center was the hardest to make

what are some suggestions you have for making the person better?

and thanks for the compliments guys

Update

i've been rendering the movie for the past few days averaging about 15 frames a day, i'm guessing it will take at least 18 more days to finish the rest of the remaining 560 frames

Update

lost the file, and have no clue why, it was there one minute gone the next.

so i had to rebuild it from a prior save.

made a few changes, nothing big, but it does look different so i need to re-render the whole thing  :P

thanks, it's been a learning expierience.

about the lighting issue, i've gotten around the aparent "ghost" in the middle of the room.

and for lighting the fan, i think i'll just add a spotlight shining up, just to give it some color

i'm most likely going to attempt to render the whole movie on friday, but i can barely render one frame, anim8or keeps locking up.

hopefully it will turn out all right

all-right, thanks for the tip, i'll experiment with the lighting, ambient levels, and light color till it looks right.

meanwhile, heres a couple of renders showing some of the details.

the whole room is animatable and i do have a flythrough animation set up.

just an anecdote of how bad of modeling i was doing earlier, i made a set of wire shelves that had 21,000 faces, but now i've reduced it to 3,100!

update 8:30 10/11/09

i worked long and hard and finally got all the lighting settings right. i saved, and then attempted to make it a bit better by closing the blinds(using a morph), and beveling the edges of the walls a bit, but now the lighting is all skewered, everything became dark.

anyone know why this happened? all of the settings are the same as the first one, only difference is the bevel and morph. unfortunately i noticed it after i had saved the changes i made but before the render came out bad

update 9:45 10/11/09

all is not lost!  ;D

i made a new file from a recent autosave, and just transfered the major settings over from the old file, so i have not lost much data, but it would still be nice to know what went wrong.

i backed it up to a thumbdrive as well  ;)

update 8:30 11/11/09

i rendered a large image with the latest lighting settings.

i know the floor texture is wrong and that the fan is not lit, but i don't know why, the lights are right there.

thank you, most of my time went into texturing, measuring, and terrible modeling.  :P

theres a wireframe for subdivided and shaded lines for mesh

i do have one question.

the lighting in my room has been a pain, i got all the lighting ok when i was using scanline ::) but once i swiched to ART, everything got dark. now just making my lights brighter does not help but rather makes a big bright splotch on the floor. i've been messing with it for several days, have any suggestions?
