General Anim8or Forum / modeling for print

Any tips?

I'm thinking the best way is to model the character rig then pose it.

Rather than modeling in it's pose.

Which do you you think would be easier?

I thought I tried them all, but I guess I missed one. It works on Windows XP SP3. :)

General Anim8or Forum / Anim8or on Windows 10
« on: July 29, 2015, 06:01:01 pm »
I just installed Windows 10 today and it doesn't work. I'm playing around with compatibility modes but I haven't had any luck yet. Anyone know a way to run Anim8or on Windows 10?

(I'm using the 1166 version, so I'm not even sure that's the latest version.)

Ongoing Anim8or Development / Wireframe mode hides reference image

1.088

I played around in the settings but still nothing. When I go to wireframe view it looks like a transparent face.

Edit: Sorry I'm not sure if this is a bug or a settings thing. You can go ahead and move it if it's a bug.

General Anim8or Forum / Re: Blenderize me, but why?

Anim8or is pretty amazing. It does lack a lot of things though. I've been working with Anim8or on and off for years and there has always been talk of other software to use with Anim8or.

That being said, if you start using Blender (or another package), you don't have to "outgrow" Anim8or as nemyax said. You should find ways to incorporate other software with Anim8or. A polygon is a polygon. As for me this is the best modeler in the universe. I know the UI and how to get where I'm going quickly. There is no reason, that I know of, to change the way I model. If I'm doing something that Anim8or isn't capable of, I export to another program and do it there.

Blender is a great program. It's main flaw is the learning curve. But it's free. So if you're a penny pincher, I suggest you learn Blender. If money isn't a problem, then there are tons of different software packages you can use instead. But if you're anything like me, then you will still use Anim8or for certain things because of the easy workflow.

I'm wondering if you didn't follow correctly or you had an incomplete tutorial.

You have to unlock the bones to move them. You double click on the bone and click the check boxes beside x,z, and y. After that they should move, and if they don't it's probably that glitch thing I mentioned.

I remember doing that too. Some things in anim8or are kind of weird. One weird thing is that sometimes you have to rotate the view to get some things to move. Maybe that will work.

It's not anim8or related, but I think it's too good to pass up. I really don't know anything about the program, but I know it made the Toy Story movies, as well as some of their other movies.

The are giving it away for free and I like free stuff. You need to register for it at the pixar website.

Just thought I'd let you guys know about it.

General Anim8or Forum / Re: using anim8or as a mechanical cad program
« on: June 03, 2014, 06:19:17 pm »
I think the simpler the better. It's why I like anim8or so much. You don't have to jump through hoops to do what you want to do.

Selecting/targeting the specific parts of the model will be key in it's success. There is a select loop script out there, where you select a line and it automatically selects the whole loop, so I think the capabilities are there already. Now it's really trying to determine what shape it is. If it's cylindrical, you would probably want to know the diameter and the degrees of the arc. If it's rectangular, you would probably want the angle and surface area.

I know when you double click on a line, it gives a measurement. I'm not sure what unit of measurement it's in, but if you can convert it, it shouldn't be much more work. I would just add to the pop up box with extra features.

Also, selecting more than one part of the model (in sections) would be another great feature.

I think I'll just go ahead and do this in anim8or. I can wait for the development. I'm in no hurry at all. I'll just use the popup box to see my measurements, that way even though I don't know how big it really is, I still know that everything is precise.

Have fun on your vacation dude.

General Anim8or Forum / using anim8or as a mechanical cad program
« on: June 01, 2014, 09:26:38 pm »
I've been searching the forums and I haven't found a whole lot. It looks like Steve is making some cad functionality, but I don't think it's nearly finished. I tried out the ruler and I don't understand it at all.

Is there a script/plugin that has a ruler? Mainly one on point edit mode.

Has anyone used anim8or for precise mechanical modeling for 3d printing?

I'd rather not succumb to this, but do you know of another open source program with what I'm looking for? (I'd honestly rather model in anim8or, but if it doesn't have the capabilities yet I'll have to find another program.)

In case you are wondering what I'm going to do, I'm going to print out an RC car. I'm going to build every part including the engine.

Fixed it. (I hope)

Thanks for the replies.

Subject kind of sums it up. I'm not sure if I have some sort of a virus or if this is how it is now.

When I clicked the FORUM tab it sent me to a download page for java. It wasn't the official java website either.

I clicked on a picture to make it bigger in the WIP section, and it sent me to another site for a different download.

There are also the blue links in the content, so if you hover over it ads pop up.

Let me know if this is something just on my end, or if this is the new normal.

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / Re: Feature Request Thread
« on: February 19, 2014, 04:00:52 am »
Wow. Looks like there's a lot of work to be done. I'm so glad to see anim8or being worked on so much.

I tried to read your main post (Raxx) and some of that stuff is over my head. So I don't know if these requests are already mentioned or not.

My 1st request is a hotkey for the add edge button. I use it a lot. Like really a lot. I usually model point to point.

My second request. A more advanced slide tool. One where you can select multiple edges and slide them on individual lines all at once.

My third. I really like the new mirror function. I've mentioned this before a few months ago, but I model on the left side of the screen and it doesn't work right. If you could make it universal, that would be great.

These requests really shouldn't be on the top of any list. Except maybe the hotkey for the add edge. But they will only make the/my workflow better. I'd honestly rather see inverse kinematics more than anything.

I just thought I'd throw my two cents in. Keep up the good work.

I'm back already!

I'm having a bit of a problem. On the left side of the model, the left and right are reversed. On the right side of the model it works fine.

I model on the left side, so things are kind of backwards. Is there a way to reverse it?

Hey, I figured it out. :)

I think I model like most people do, and model one side of an object then mirror it.

Well, (assuming everyone else does it this way) this is how to use the mirror function.

When you mirror an object, you need to do a few more steps.

After you mirror your object, you actually get two separate objects. We now need to make this one object. To do this, select both objects (your original and mirrored), click the BUILD tab, and then JOIN SOLIDS.

Now you have one whole object. But we aren't done yet. You might notice you have a big seam going down the middle of your model. This is due to the points overlap one another. To fix this, do the following.

Select all the points going down the middle of your model. Click the EDIT tab, then click on MERGE POINTS. (I usually just press shift+l (make sure you have CAPS LOCK off)).

The box will appear and it will give you an option to change the number. This number is the distance between the points to merge. If your number is too high, you might merge some points you don't want to. I usually do .025, but play around with it to understand it.

Now you have your object mirror, and you got rid of your seam.

To enable the NEW MIRROR function, simply click on BUILD tab, and hover over MIRRORED. Select the CONVERT TO MIRROR button. And there you have it. Every thing you do on one side of the model will be mimicked on the other side.

I should have prefaced this 1st, but I just discovered the new mirror function midway through making my model. So I'm not sure how you should start it, but I'm sure you can do the same thing with two polygons. Anyway, If you didn't know about this already. You do now. :)
