@davdud: AO mean Ambient Occlusion. It's a render pass which creates realistic light bounces and shadows. It will make tight places, places when normally light doesn't reach so good, darker. This will give a more realistic lighting.
ie -->image

Same goes voor HDRI reflections: they will make you reflections more realistic. It the tiny details that will make you composite realistic.

Looks nice davdud. I just saw your youtube clip.
One thing with reflections and working with background to achieve those reflections: Have you ever heard or tried HDRI shooting?
In this method you use a 100% reflective sphere (like a silver ball you put in your christmastree--> the bigger the better) and mkae photo's of it in you scene you will later composite. This way you get the best looking reflections. More about that here: http://www.pointzero.nl/dump/mirrorball_theory/

Also: try using a AO-layer in your composite: It will make you 3d objects look more realistic because of the fine shadows.

@davdud: Is that supposed to be me?  Yarrrr! :p       Nice entry!
@3D Joe Wiltshire: the modeling should be done in anim8or, but you allowed the render in a other program.
@BMattster: I like you use of colors and reflections! Maybe a bit more AA samples to make it a bit less grainy...
@NickE: Didn't count them... but I will believe you that it are exactly 1000 bees :p
maybe a bee hive would be a nice surrounding?

some do it down some forward.

When the palms face forward the skin on the forearm is relaxed. (It's the natural position with regards to the skin 'tension' for lack of a better term) However when you twist it to face down the skin twists. Try looking at your forearm and you'll see the twist.

I learned this on another forum where I asked for feedback on one of my models.

I think you mean the other way around: palms down is the natural way and has no twist I believe.

General Anim8or Forum / Re: What is map transparency
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:50:46 pm »
I think you mean a transparency map. This is a black and white image you can add to your material. The black parts of the image will be transparent in your render, while the white will be visible. With such a map you can easily make objects which are hard and time-consuming to model: like leaves, grids, hair etc
Read more about the use here: Advanced textures

Anim8or Challenges / [ COMPLETE ] Challenge #25: 1000
« on: April 04, 2011, 05:45:42 pm »

Welcome to challenge #25: 1000!

This, my friends, is my 1000th post on the anim8or forum. Now I wonder what you people can do with the number 1000.

So what do you have to do?
Make a still image with the number 1000 in mind. You can use it a text or figuratively.
ie: a thousand dollar bill, or thousand dollar bills ;)

Be creative and see how you can use the number 1000 in your image.

Deadline?
One month: May 4th.

good luck!

You can use a IOR attribute in combination with a reflection or dielectric attribute to make the refractions more realistic.
You can read about attributes here: ART Attributes.

I like the render nick, too bad you can't easily render more of them.

About your questions:
At first: are you object casting/recieving shadows? and are you light(s) casting shadows? Else it might be possible that you have shadows turned of in your render settings. Go view>preferences and make sure that shadows are check on in your file output.

You can use black and white textures as transparency maps on you materials: double click on you material to open your material editior. Click textures. Now a new windows opens where you can load different textures. Now load you black and white image in the 'trans' -tab. Black will be see through and white will be visible.

Yes, unfortunately anim8or doesn't support caustics. But mental ray has. It's still difficult to get those shadows right.

You can also texture those face with a material which has a high emissive value. It will give the material a bit of a glow.
