I was wondering if you had plans to do a pseudo-3D using pre-rendered images like Baldur's Gate, Septerra Core, or Diablo I & II. There are a few good engines out there to accomplish that type of gaming and many are free. I believe you are talking about the Game Maker by YoYo Games? That is a great engine to use. Keep up the great work.

Nice work. Is your game engine something you made or third party software?

Hello Wizard,

Those are some nice photo realistic renders.

My friend Josh makes cars as well, but to be used in games. Yours are much more detailed, you can see some of his work here;

He got real mad when Blender dropped the knife tool that he used in that video. I have lost touch with him over time, I guess we both have our own lives to live.

I took only the one Python coding class here in college and it is a bear. However from what I understand about "speed" it all depends on how the program is executed and what OS is used. If you are running it from a command prompt and type > python myscript.py  Then the code is read in and operates much like an interrupter very slow to load but the execution speed seems ok. However if you convert the script into bytecode you execute > myscript.pyc it loads up much faster. Personally I am NOT a fan of Python because it is testy about indenting. The one class was very basic and we didn't get into advance uses.  I dislike programming altogether and it was needed for the credit.

No, it is a BSD License with the University that developed it. Read more here: http://www.panda3d.org/license.php Three basic rules to follow; 1) Include the engine copyright notice. 2) Compiled programs must reproduce the above copyright notice, conditions and the disclaimer.  3) Carnegie Mellon University and staff cannot be used to promote your project.

To my understanding Disney used this for Toon Town and Pirates of the Caribbean. So if you have played them that should give you some idea of what kind of engine to expect, however 3D models and textures is in your court.

The gaming world of mesh has evolved to use the game engine and Direct X tech to make the models "seem" to be hires mesh. While high-resolution models are more appealing, they require more resources for storage and rendering. Faced with this trade off, you may choose to create one fixed, low-resolution version for distant views or fast motion, and a separate high-resolution version for close-ups or places where high visual appeal is critical. MRM (multi-resolution mesh) is one such example.

In order to accomplish you goal you may have to consider investing time to learn other 3D model programs. I am not saying that it would be implausible with Anim8or, just it would be like trying to design a fancy dress using a hand loom, needle and thread.

Another avenue to explore is Panda 3D. This has been used to create commercial grade online MMOs to simple shooters. The programming language is python, but can use the directx models or convert your models to the egg format used by the engine. You can't beat the price since it is free.

Blender 2.49 and lower was great for this with a built in game engine. Anything higher than 2.49 and they lost focus on the game engine and started working more on animation aspect.  A old friend of mine has a few good game and modeling tutorials about that here ->

I suggest you look into a program I use called "Make Human" from makehuman.org these models can be saved as obj and imported to Anim8or. Remove the unwanted body and make the eyes about 2.5 times bigger, small to no nose and tiny mouth for anime features.

You could try this example, should you want to do it from scratch.

I haven't been on here for a while and thought I would see if the program had an upgrade yet. If I was working in Blender this would be a snap because you can just assign the vertices to be cloth. But since I am in Rome, I will do the way the Romans do it.  :D

Try running multiple bones down all sides of the skirt. Like this dress tutorial I found (a while back) and ripped before the site went down;

General Anim8or Forum / Interesting Video

Well Hello everyone, just finishing up at college and I guess I will be staying in the parents basement again this summer. Ah, summer in the dungeon!  :P

I came across this neat video on youtube, it is not Anim8or but the topic and how it was filmed is very interesting.

Maybe I will be around here this summer showing off my own work.

ASL Scripts / Import Bones or Armature?
« on: May 12, 2010, 02:39:49 pm »
Is there a script that will import the bones or armature in from other formats?

I am bugging the hell out of my Blender contacts about this same thing.  I want to be able and should be able to go straight from Blender --> Anim8or or the reverse.  Both programs are now use a scripting language to do advanced import and export.  Some one informed me that Blender exports the bones in collada but to my knowledge there is no import script for collada?

Even so that feels just like having to jump through Anim8or --> 3DS -->Blender.  Blender uses a Python script which being no programmer myself don't know the difference between the two codes.

If someone wanted to be the big man on campus all they have to do is cook up this script and they would be #1 in my book.

wacky,

any chance of seeing this video your friend made?  Still mulling over options as I work the models.

Sure:

You don't have to watch the full video the effect is around 2 minutes into the video.

A friend of mine made video on video without the chroma key.  He used a picture in picture effect on 2 videos using something called "Zweistein" which is freeware.  I don't know the limitations but I know he made an audience staring at a blank wall in the main video then he place a frame on the blank wall for the other video.

I have been running Anim8or on my new laptop Kubuntu OS (KDE) with Wine.  No crashes, if you go with a dual boot system as described above, then you might as well use a free OS.  You can try Kubuntu and if you don't like it you haven't spent a lot of money.

But as you said, you had it running in Win 7, so there is no reason it shouldn't work again.  As my instructor says, "Something on the computer has changed, it is up to you to find out what has changed.  The sooner the better.".  I usually start debugging by doing a search on all files changed in the last 24 hours.  Then if I am working on Windows I start looking for malware or registry errors.

 :o

That's fine it is still a free planet and they haven't made me Queen yet.  You can do what you like it's your money.  I am a poor broke college student that couldn't even go on Spring break this year.   :'(  I was just offering you some options.  I use Blender mostly but when my laptop crashed I took up the Anim8or on my parents PC (a real dinosaur).

Now I had some choices to make... new laptop or vacation in Florida?  I chose new laptop.  But honestly I can only answer those questions to some degree about Blender.

Quote
  • realtime reflections/refractions/ratracing - yes pixel shading too.
  • in-game mesh editing - yes of course
  • PhysX physics engine - yes  (not PhysX) but yes
  • 3 different programing languages - more than 3
  • can make games for any gaming device - I'm going to say yes*
  • is compatible with both macs and PCs - yes Linux too which is what I run on my laptop.
  • 'just press play' testing/in game editing - yes P key

*You might want to check the fine print on that "any device" clause, I am not saying they are dishonest. I just know one of the students here at college is trying to just make an Xbox 360 game and Microsoft terms of use states that he can only create it and give it away free of charge unless they own full rights to your software.  That's Microsoft for you.

Again I want to assure you that my motives are not to talk you out of buying this engine, just to inform you of other options.  And the only one you have to pay for that I listed is the Unreal Engine if you make money otherwise it too free.
