General Anim8or Forum / Spammer Account and Messages were Deleted
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:36:37 pm »
I want to thank everyone who notified me about the flood of spam from "francessimk".  There are too many of you who did that for me to reply to directly, and I apologize for that.  He was using a sophisticated, world wide network of computers, most likely infected with a virus of some sort.  It's quite time comsuming to try and clean this all up.

Please let me know if you see any other similar posts.  Hopefully that won't happen again.

Thanks,

Steve

Challenge #1: Model A Bench

Welcome ladies and gentlemen! The goal here is to create a bench. What kind of bench? Any kind at all! Just make sure it's one you can sit on ;)

How best to create this bench? Since most benches are solid objects boxmodelling will be the key.
Use the point edit mode to manipulate the faces, points and lines of a standard primitive, a box will be best.

Post your progress, c&c, and/or final renders in this topic!

Deadline: Completed!

Anim8or Challenges / Guideline - Read before you start!
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:25:37 pm »
Welcome to the Anim8or Challenges! Please read on!

How it Works
Every so often a global moderator will create a new Challenge Topic. These topics contain information on what you'll be making, how you'll be making it, and how long you have before the challenge ends. Users who want to participate may then post their progress inside that challenge topic and give C&C to the other participants.

Goals
Of course there's a purpose behind all this!
  • To Give the ability for users to work on a common ground
  • To Allow users to improve their skills and learn Anim8or and CG in general
  • To Allow healthy competition and collaboration between members of this community
  • To Give users something to do when they're bored
  • To Have fun!

Rules
Please follow these simple rules!
  • Original work, please: If you use something you didn't make (like a bush or tree in a scene modeling a farm house, a texture. etc.) give credit to it's source.
  • Follow the criteria: Don't go off on a tangent and do your own thing, at least until you've done everything within the criteria first ;)
  • Use Anim8or: You can use other tools (uv mapping, composition, etc.) but the majority of the modeling should be done with Anim8or.
  • Observe proper forum etiquette: This is still part of the forum!
  • Deadline:Each challenge will have a specific time limit.  You're allowed (encouraged!) to keep working on your models after the challenge is closed but to be fair to the other entrants winners will be chosen from work submitted by the deadline.
  • If you know, say so: Advice and constructive criticism is welcome when requested.

Who wins what?
Every once in a while there will be a competitive challenge where a winner is declared. However, most times it will be non-competitive! Aside from improving your skills, getting recognition for those skills, having portfolio filler, having something to do, and possibly having your work submitted to the official Anim8or.com gallery if it's good enough, there are no rewards for participating. Just have fun with everyone else!

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / A Note About the GUI and New Features
« on: September 26, 2008, 06:30:41 am »
Guys, attributes are a quick way to get new functionality into Anim8or.  It only takes a second to use them within Anim8or.  Adding new fields in dialogs and all the code to handle them is a lot more work.  So many new things in these "previews" are done the quick way - using attributes - so I can experiment and so I can get some feedback from everybody on what works, what doesn't, and what else is needed. The most useful attributes will likely be moved to normal dialogs for real releases.

So don't worry about how hard it is to add attributes, etc.  They'll always be there for end user extensibility and other experimentaion.  But official "releases" will do move many of them into proper dialogs.

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / Ambient Occluder Example
« on: September 21, 2008, 09:55:26 pm »
The v0.97d update supports Ambient Occlusion, a global light solution for ambient illumination.  It uses the background as an area light.  Normally you use it to improve the realism of shadows between close objects, in crevices, etc.  In the extreme it can be used as the only light source for an extire scene as shown by this example.  It uses ambient occlusion, global intensity = 0.0 (i.e. effectively no lights) and an ambient intensity = 3.14 to treat the whole sky as a light.  This technique requires a lot of samples to get rid of the noise for this.  One image uses 64x AA and the other uses 256x.

ASL Scripts / New ASL Functions in v0.97b update
« on: June 05, 2008, 07:07:09 am »
There are some new functions in the v0.97b update that might be useful:

1. shape.GetNumEdges(), etc.

2. write to the console: open("$console", "w");

3. mesh.DeletePoint(), etc.

4. functions to access to attributes,

5. Spline access functions.  You can make cool looking chains and ropes that follow the shape of a spline!

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / v0.97b Preview Ready
« on: June 05, 2008, 07:01:29 am »
I've posted an update to the latest preview called v0.97b.  It's dated June 1, 2008 and adds:

1. a few more texture modes to the ART renderer,

2. some new ASL script functions,

3. multi-threaded rendering (no, it doesn't use more threads to render faster, it uses one to render and one for the GUI to make Anim8or more responsive when rendering and to keep Vista from thinking that Anim8or is locked up.  Multiple threads for faster rendeing will come later.)  Please test the multi-threaded mode (use the Render->Multithreaded command to enable it) and let me know about any problems.

4. Some v0.97 bugs have been fixed.

Read the update on the v0.97 Preview page for details http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/index.html

General Anim8or Forum / Interview with Tyson Ibele
« on: April 15, 2008, 05:45:30 am »
Tyson Ibele first used Anim8or when he was 13 back in 2000.  He's a very talented animator and is now working professionally in New Zealand.  Here is an inteview with him that shows some of his amazing work and give a little advice on how to improve your animation skills.  (Don't miss his reference to Anim8or in the quote below the video :-)

I have posted a new preview, v0.97.  It's main feature is a ray tracer called ART (for Anim8or Ray Tracer, naturally!)  Check out the "v0.97 Preview" link in the menu or just click here: http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/index.html  Don't miss the ray tracer documentation either:  http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html

General Anim8or Forum / Welcome to the New Anim8or Forum
« on: December 15, 2007, 11:44:44 pm »
I've decided to switch to new forum software.  It has a lot more features that the old UBB software that I think you'll enjoy.

If you are an existing member you'll need to reregister in order to post.  When you do please don't use someone else's user name.

I'm still working out the kinks in administering it so please be patient if you run into any glitches.
