Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / A Note About the GUI and New Features

Guys, attributes are a quick way to get new functionality into Anim8or.  It only takes a second to use them within Anim8or.  Adding new fields in dialogs and all the code to handle them is a lot more work.  So many new things in these "previews" are done the quick way - using attributes - so I can experiment and so I can get some feedback from everybody on what works, what doesn't, and what else is needed. The most useful attributes will likely be moved to normal dialogs for real releases.

So don't worry about how hard it is to add attributes, etc.  They'll always be there for end user extensibility and other experimentaion.  But official "releases" will do move many of them into proper dialogs.

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / Ambient Occluder Example

The v0.97d update supports Ambient Occlusion, a global light solution for ambient illumination.  It uses the background as an area light.  Normally you use it to improve the realism of shadows between close objects, in crevices, etc.  In the extreme it can be used as the only light source for an extire scene as shown by this example.  It uses ambient occlusion, global intensity = 0.0 (i.e. effectively no lights) and an ambient intensity = 3.14 to treat the whole sky as a light.  This technique requires a lot of samples to get rid of the noise for this.  One image uses 64x AA and the other uses 256x.

Importing a scene from a .an8 project can cause Anim8or to crash.  I may post an update for this soon.

ASL Scripts / New ASL Functions in v0.97b update

There are some new functions in the v0.97b update that might be useful:

1. shape.GetNumEdges(), etc.

2. write to the console: open("$console", "w");

3. mesh.DeletePoint(), etc.

4. functions to access to attributes,

5. Spline access functions.  You can make cool looking chains and ropes that follow the shape of a spline!

Anim8or v0.98 Discussion Forum / v0.97b Preview Ready

I've posted an update to the latest preview called v0.97b.  It's dated June 1, 2008 and adds:

1. a few more texture modes to the ART renderer,

2. some new ASL script functions,

3. multi-threaded rendering (no, it doesn't use more threads to render faster, it uses one to render and one for the GUI to make Anim8or more responsive when rendering and to keep Vista from thinking that Anim8or is locked up.  Multiple threads for faster rendeing will come later.)  Please test the multi-threaded mode (use the Render->Multithreaded command to enable it) and let me know about any problems.

4. Some v0.97 bugs have been fixed.

General Anim8or Forum / Polly: Game Engine with Anim8or Support

Polly is an OpenGL base game engine that has direct Anim8or support.  In the near future the source will be available under to GPL license.  Written by Nicolaas.

I haven't had time to try it yet so if you do let us know!

Tyson Ibele first used Anim8or when he was 13 back in 2000.  He's a very talented animator and is now working professionally in New Zealand.  Here is an inteview with him that shows some of his amazing work and give a little advice on how to improve your animation skills.  (Don't miss his reference to Anim8or in the quote below the video :-)

I've decided to switch to new forum software.  It has a lot more features that the old UBB software that I think you'll enjoy.

If you are an existing member you'll need to reregister in order to post.  When you do please don't use someone else's user name.

I'm still working out the kinks in administering it so please be patient if you run into any glitches.
