Is spherical UV mapping still possible? There doesn't seem to be an option for it anymore.

Put a light source inside/near the object.

The links are broken. :(

Off topic, but:
This is why when the sun is around the horizon especially on a hot day, tends to look bigger.
That's actually an optical illusion. When on the horizon, the sun is surrounded by smaller objects that make it look bigger by comparison.

It also gets redder because the light is weakened as it passes through more atmosphere (the light itself looses energy).
Close, but not quite. Shorter wavelengths (blue, green) are scattered more easily than longer wavelengths (red, yellow). As the light passes through more of the atmosphere, more of the shorter wavelengths have been scattered out, leaving only the longer wavelengths.

Can we get a way to place light sources in object mode? This would allow for parallel lights to precisely match up with suns in skyboxes, or headlights on cars, etc. I realize that objects in scene mode can be set as parents of light sources, but this would allow for more symmetrical light placement and light duplication.

Try Google.

It turns out that you can't use Screen2Avi unless you download a new codec. Here's my second attempt. Texture and music credits in the video description.

Here's my still. I tried recording my progress, but Screen2Avi had other plans. So, in place of a video, I've attached a drawing of my original idea for the spacecraft. Everything modeled and rendered in Anim8or, postwork and textures in Photoshop.

Definitely need more time. I'd like to do this, but I only found out about it a week ago and haven't been able to record because of computer problems.

-snip-
Or, you could cut out a square piece of a highly subdivided long/lat sphere, UV map it so a texture extends just beyond its boundaries, then load it into Terranim8or. Displace it using a height map and put it back in Anim8or. Once in Anim8or, rotate and move the object until the terrain is at the origin.

The blue is an emissive material, yes. I had 4 dark blue-gray infinite lights and some light blue-gray fog. There are also some cloud layers in there.

And here are the originals.

I was bored, came up with this. Quite a bit of postwork in Photoshop to get it to look like this, originals in the next post.

Finally have a better starfield, but because of the highly subdivided spheres making up the giant robot (and because my computer's a potato) Anim8or sometimes freezes while loading the file.

Here it is with some extra mesh detail, a different camera/light position, and a lowres skybox because the computer I'm rendering this on is a few heating elements away from being a toaster. I will eventually make a better starfield, though. :)
