Anim8or Challenges / Re: Challenge #29: GIANT ROBOTS!!!

It is my entry, but it's still WIP. I need to add a background, more detail, and change the camera position.

This is the biggest thing that could be considered a robot. It's a self-building space station the size of a small planet. It was equipped with one of the most powerful supercomputers ever built, but its method of checking whether it had finished building relied on the computer running during the time it took to build. Due to a solar storm, the computer lost power before completing construction, and when it was turned back on it continued building. It has been adding on to itself for approximately 3000 years, sending out small probes to collect materials regularly.

Its computer has also been improving itself over this time, and soon it figured out how to turn any material into the specific metals it needs using specially-built reactors, increasing the amount of matter it can take in. Part of it is converted to energy using other types of reactor, and this energy is used to power the station.

I use a similar effect for planetary atmospheres, except I use a duplicate of the planet mesh instead of a panel. Instead of using the Emissive property, though, I use a very high (>2) diffuse value, tinted to the appropriate color.

I would get rid of the fog and flatten the terrain a bit. You might also want to scale it up some.

I use WMM2.6. There's plenty of addon effects and titles here: http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=28
Although 2.6 is designed for Vista, only XP effects and transitions will work.

You could try POV.

In my minds eye, I see the post-cataclysm Neptune being a sick yellow/orange colour, perhaps with a blueish tinge at the poles, with massive and violent storms through the equatorial regions as previously-frozen gasses well up from the boiling interior.  There might also be a gaseous 'tail' streaming away into Neptune's dark side, much like a comet's, as the outer layers are stripped away by the solar radiation.
If Neptune was more orange/yellow, I'd have a hard time recognizing it and I'm sure most people would too. Massive, violent storms would be doable, as would some color adjustments. Maybe instead of making it orange with blue poles, I could keep it blue but with yellow/orange wisps floating through the atmosphere like smoke. I doubt, though, that a planet the size of Neptune would have a tail behind it, considering its distance from the sun. I could see Earth or Jupiter having a cometlike tail but no Neptune. I'm about to start work on a "hot Triton" texture based on the one from here: http://laps.noaa.gov/albers/sos/sos.html

I think this one looks better. Attached the full-size texture this time.

Made a "hot Neptune" texture. The idea is that if the sun is a red giant, Neptune will be much hotter than it is now, drastically altering its appearance. The texture I've attached is 1024x512, the full-size texture is 4kx2k. I've also attached a render using the small version (because this computer freezes up if I try to use the larger one).

Do you care if I start a new thread for stuff I'm making for this?

If it was small enough, you might not have noticed it. Because you didn't notice it you didn't add it in Anim8or.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to by a new USB card for my computer. I guess I'll just have to start over from scratch... :(

Judging by its appearance and movement, I'd say it's a banner trailing behind a plane.
